JOIN THE PATROL

Thank you for your interest in joining the MWVSP. Our patrol is very unique because of the environment we operate in and therefore we only recruit candidates with previous patrolling experience, advanced medical training, or previous mountaineering/guiding experience. We also have non-NSP members that are experienced in the medical field (doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc.) and in backcountry rescue. If you meet these requirements and are interested in joining our patrol, contact MWVSP patrol director (PD) at mwvsp1@gmail.com and complete your application online after reviewing the requirements below. The MWVSP patrol requirements are as follows:

Mount Washington Volunteer Ski Patrol | Patroller Requirements (Updated for 2024)

Required

Medical Certification: The US Forest Service has revised its EMS program to align more closely with the US Park Service EMS program. This new directive introduces a credentialing system operating under the National EMS Education Standards. At the present time, the minimum certification level accepted for new MWVSP candidates requires National Registry as an EMT. We welcome advanced EMTs (AEMT) and paramedics (EMTP) as well. Subsequent to an accepted patrol application, registered nurses may be credentialed at the EMT level by the USFS Local Emergency Medical Advisor and doctors will be credentialed based on their experience and background. All medical certifications must be active and current to provide first aid on behalf of the USFS and MWVSP. All applicants are also subject to a background check.

Avalanche 1 Training: All patrollers are required to have taken a level 1 registered avalanche course no later than by the start of their first year of MWVSP patrolling after candidate year. Accepted classes are registered by NSP, AIARE, AAA , or as otherwise approved in advance by PD.

Additional Desired Skills

  • Advanced Avalanche Training Skills – Level 2 or equivalent training and/or commensurate field experience working in avalanche terrain.
  • Advanced mountaineering skills – Advanced training in outdoor skills including technical rescue, guiding, wilderness survival, etc.
  • Five years minimum as active patroller or wilderness rescue personnel, with exceptional communication skills and scene management experience.

Complete your application online, or download the form and email it back to the MWVSP patrol director at mwvsp1@gmail.com.
